Daisy Riggs was my grandmother
Daisy Evelyn Wells was born on December 4, 1910, in New Madrid, Missouri. Her father Edwin was 52 and her mother, Minnie Mae Gouge was 42.
Minnie was 17 years old when she was married to Edwin. I have a copy of the Letter of Consent from her father dated May 31, 1886.
Minnie was to bear 15 children before she passed away at age 64. Edwin’s death remains a mystery. No official death certificate was ever found.
Daisy had four children, including my mother, Peggy. In her final years, Daisy Riggs built a doll hospital business, where she would repair antique dolls and, being a seamstress, sewed period costumes with hats and adornments, giving dignity to every doll she gave new life to.
My grandmother married John William Riggs on November 5, 1927, in Paragould, Arkansas. Her education stopped when she was in the 8th grade.
She died on January 21, 1988, in St Joseph, Michigan, at the age of 77, and was buried in Lakeside, Michigan.
